The bulk movers of the commercial fleet, they are designed primarily with commercial considerations in mind. A fully laden Bahoot freighter is big and slow - and therefore an obvious target for raiders.
To compensate for their poor performance thay are all fitted with command bridges and some have military heavy laser turrets. The command bridges gives them superior sensor ranges allowing them to avoid some potential trouble. The military heavy laser turrets gives them the potential to severely damage raiding ships before they can get close enough to use their own shorter range weapons.
An additional problem for raiders is that an empty freighter is quite agile being able to pull nearly 2 gees. It makes a reasonable combat ship when empty as several raiders have found to their cost
These freighters are often pressed into service as fleet auxilliaries. Their capacious holds are easily converted for other pusposes. They find uses as troop transports, oilers, and even light carriers. Woe betide the raider that attacks a slow easy freighter to find he is attacking a fully loaded carrier.
